Nestling on the banks
of the Wye sits Ashford - in - the - Water. Its "sheepwash"
is the oldest, narrowest and most most picturesque of several
bridges spanning the river here. It was built originally for
packhorses but is now closed to all traffic and takes its name
from an adjacent stone enclosure in which sheep used to be dipped.
- The village, which dresses
6 wells on the Saturday before Trinity Sunday, has numerous 18thC
buildings and a few from the 17thC including a tithe barn. There
is also a hexagonaly roofed old market stand and Holy Trinity
church, adorned with memorials carved from the locally quarried
black marble.
