Tideswell

Tideswell church is often described as"the Cathedral of the Peak".Erected between 1300 and 1370, it is almost wholly in the Decorated style, with its unusual eight - pinnacled tower in the Perpendicular style. Inside the building is a wealth of wood - carving mainly 19thC by local man Advent Hunstone.

There is much more to explore and see in the rest of the village. The late 18thC George Hotel, Blake house and Eccles House are especially interesting. Tideswell received a market charter in 1250 and
flourished in the wool and lead trades in the 14thC, explaining the lavishness of the church. It is renowned for the quality of its well dressing ceremony which starts the Wakes Week on the Saturday nearest John the Baptist's Day - the week's festivities are concluded witha torchlight procession and a unique Morris Dance.
